WHO Faces Significant Staff Reduction Following US Funding Withdrawal
This global health organization has announced plans to cut its workforce by almost a fourth – totaling over 2,000 jobs – before the middle of 2026.
Financial Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring
The move follows following the United States, previously the agency's largest donor, pulled out funding earlier this period.
Washington had been responsible for about 18% of the organization's overall funding, creating a significant budgetary shortfall.
Projected Workforce Cuts
According to internal projections, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.
This reduction of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.
"This year has been one of the most difficult in our existence, as we have navigated a painful but necessary process of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.
Budget Gap Persists
This Switzerland-headquartered organization now faces a funding gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total budget.
This figure marks an improvement from a previous estimated shortfall of $1.7bn reported in May.
Excluded Funding
These financial calculations exclude an additional $1.1bn in expected contributions from current discussions with multiple donors.
The representative for the organization stated that the present unfunded portion of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in previous years, attributing this to multiple reasons:
- A smaller total budget
- Initiation of a fresh fundraising effort
- Higher in member states' required fees
The restructuring process is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a reshaped structure.
