The Power Struggle Over CNN Reveals How Dysfunctional American Media Has Become.

Late Thursday, while unconfirmed reports spread concerning a shooting at Brown University, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins took to social media, noting the confusion and directing people to her channel's 9pm newscast.

While CNN is certainly not a impeccable news source, her words rang true for a lot of people. It remains one of the organizations where you can find reality-based and generally trustworthy reporting – especially during breaking news situations like the one taking place close to a New Hampshire storage facility.

A Vulnerable Situation During a Business Battle

Yet CNN, now middle-aged, finds itself in a uncertain state as two huge media corporations vie for ownership of its corporate owner, Warner Bros Discovery.

Whatever the outcome, the future of CNN has turned into a high-risk game of business acquisition, not as a question of what serves the information-seeking public.

“Here is one more case of the fundamental flaws with roots in many years of governmental choices,” stated Victor Pickard, author of “Democracy Without Journalism?” and a media policy professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

The conjecture about which company will control Warner Bros Discovery – could it be Netflix or Paramount Skydance? – overlooks a larger point.

“It gets presented as a financial tale with key players as the central actors, but there is very little discussion of the common good,” Pickard explained.

A Further Element: Political Influence

The CNN scenario is complicated by Donald Trump’s views about a network he has frequently denounced as perhaps his main “fake news” foe.

Recall the chants of “CNN sucks!” at the president’s rallies, his team's disciplinary revocation of reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials, or his clashes with Collins in press briefings.

Trump now asserts that CNN needs new ownership. You can read that as ownership that will shield him from negative coverage and examination. That is a factor in why he seems to come down on the side of Paramount Skydance, which has made a unsolicited offer.

Trump has reason to prefer that suitor more. For one thing, it is run by David Ellison, son of the ally of Trump Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people.

Paramount, owner of CBS News, also recently installed the right-leaning Bari Weiss, noted for her “anti-woke” beliefs, as the lead editor of that storied news network.

A Future of Continued Turmoil

It is important to note, if Netflix prevails, CNN and other cable outlets would first be carved out into a independent unit. Such a move could be a welcome development to many at the network, but it’s far from a secure position. That arrangement could position CNN for another sale. It never ends.

In the view of Timothy Wu, much of this is a violation of antitrust statutes, anyway. The influential voice of big tech’s dominance wrote recently that competition laws should block both deals.

“Either merger would be harmful to the country, and both should be contested by the government,” Wu stated.

The Bigger Challenge and a Way Ahead

No matter the outcome with this particular battle, the underlying crisis persists.

“What we have now is a highly anti-democratic system, but we must resist the belief that change is impossible,” Pickard emphasized. Policy decisions – dating back to the 1930s and 1940s – helped to foster this profit-obsessed monster, and revised policy decisions can tackle it.

Will that happen in an era where the head of the FCC refuses to acknowledge that the agency is independent? Change is very unlikely now, but that is not to say it will be impossible forever.

Initiatives that support independent news organizations, bolster local journalism, finance public media, and prevent the consolidation of media power in too few hands are achievable – they are essential for a healthy democracy.

When it comes to media ownership, larger is not superior. And news organizations including CNN must not be tools in the latest corporate chess match.
