The England manager Questions Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
The England head coach voiced his sadness that the Three Lions team did not get stronger encouragement from the home fans during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his team continue their strong performance, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter effectively ending the match. However, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to get ready against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional ones. The stadium was silent. There was no support back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We prevented them get away. When you only hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I support my words. We cannot do more than being three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a greater backing in phases where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to regain energy, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Apart from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, Tuchel also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the choice was justified by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and netting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who host Belgium in a important qualifying match on next week, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“This is why I scheduled this friendly,” the manager stated. “I wanted to assess our standing. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was taken off at half-time after hitting a goalpost and may miss out when England face Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
